Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary Artery Disease Risk?

by our Health Coach

Question:
"What is the chance of having coronary artery disease? My dad and grandpa both have it. Grandpa passed at age 63 after having 3 quadruple bypasses. I am 34 and have a sister 31; we both are and try to continue to stay physically fit. Lately, upon exertion with exercise I have pain under my left breast. Should this be something I should be more concerned about?"

our Health Coach Answer:

It would be very unusual for you at age 34 to develop coronary artery disease. Even if you were a smoker who never exercised and also happened to be a diabetic. While pain in the area under the left breast is often associated with heart problems, it can also be simple anxiety, muscle tension or strain. For women, normally the first symptoms of coronary artery disease are shortness of breath.

Here are some simple steps to take to establish your risk for heart problems:

  • Ask your Health Coach to measure a full "lipid" or cholesterol panel.
  • Also request a test called hs-CRP.
  • Have your sister do the same.
  • Compare your results with any results you have from your father and grandfather.
  • If a similar pattern of cholesterol is present, you may have inherited additional risk from your dad or grandfather.
  • If you are unsure, email the results to me and I will be glad to evaluate them for you.
Remember, stay active, keep a normal weight, and avoid all processed fats.
